VIVA! Punk Comp
Our friends over at Atomic Recordings have put out a comp which we have been placed on. "Home Cookin" off the "Have Another Round" E.P. had been put as the opening song for the comp. There are 12 other bands on the comp, whom all of which are in a contest which you get to decide the outcome. Of those other 12 bands (we are counting ourselves out since the prize is to be recorded by Atomic and put a cd out by them, since we graciously already have Socyermom Records helping us out) you go online and choose the song you like best...its cheap! So order it and listen to the bands, all of whom are from all over the US.
Cheers Guys, and click this link (check out the "rotate disk" feature to see all of the insides and disk)

Garyson from the Sycorax is celebrating his birthday that night, so come out and get him wasted...we will be hitting the stage after them, then Scenester, and finishing out the night...Forth Yeer Freshman from Denver...
So come out and enjoy a different bar for a night, and a mixture of music...and come and yell at Kevin when he hits the stage...

So speak up, and send us some good stuff. Also we would like to thank all our oversea friends: Ruby in Israel and the Rock Twins in Deutschland, Germany for you uneducated, for helping us out as well.

Having a (Rum) Fit: Review of Tour Kick Off Show
This is a review from The Butcher, aka: Mike N., about our tour Kick Off Show July 14th 2007 at Atomic Cantina, Albuquerque New Mexico.
Thank you for writing and much love!
********************************
What was wanted was a completely unbiased and objective review, so what better way to start than to say plainly: Over a year ago, when I first heard The Rum Fits, I truly disliked them. I don't know if it was the shoddy recording value of the first songs I heard, the fact that I was listening to others around me too much and poisoning my objective view of them, or maybe just the fact that I didn't give them enough of a chance.
When I was invited to attend their tour kickoff show this previous Saturday (7/14/07) in order to write a review on them, I truly expected to see what I almost always see at these types of shows: Loud, raucous music that, while it sounds excellent on CD, usually sounds like a slaughterhouse on meat packing day. I'm not trying to be overly unkind to the majority of local bands here, but even some of the truly successful punk bands I have seen have a tendency to sound horrible on the live stage. Thank goodness that the point of these shows is generally to throw yourself into one another, and not to sit back and appreciate the sound quality, or punk would have died a long time ago.
I had already listened to The Rum Fits CD about four or five times before attending the show and was truly impressed at the sound quality of it. Dana Sampson, Robert Trundle and Third Eye Studios, in my humble opinion, are unbelievably talented at capturing the way punk music should be projected to really drive it home. I am actually looking forward to finding more recordings of theirs to see how they handle different genres and styles.
Recording quality aside, the actual performance on the CD is equally surprising and impressive. Like I said before, I am a bit confused as to why I disliked The Rum Fits initially. Lucky for them, they are fairly adept at changing peoples minds with their performance. But, like most intelligent people, I am not one to make a final decision on a band (especially a local one) based purely off of their CD release. I have loved bands before, only to completely boycott them later based solely on them putting on an absolutely horrible live show.
There were three opening bands before The Rum Fits, and since this review is not about them, I will merely say: None of them truly commanded my attention. Don't get me wrong, I know two of the bands well and respect them, but something about the opening performances that night did not impress me all that much.
My initial impression of The Rum Fits was this: They were comfortable. They approached and handled the stage like it was old hat to them. I know this may be a silly thing to concentrate on in a band review, but I have spent the last six years of my life going to local shows and I'd say maybe 5% of those bands looked comfortable on stage. Yes, yes, I know the term you think I'm looking for is "Stage Presence", but it's not. Stage presence is something performers use to put on an equally impressive visual show, as well as the audible one. Just being absolutely comfortable with the stage you are on is a different thing altogether. And they were comfortable.
My second impression of The Rum Fits came immediately after they played their first chord: They're explosive. As "comfortable" as I say they were, the minute show time came, they all exploded into a fervor of pure mosh-inducing beauty. I cannot recall a time during their set that even a single one of them was standing still. I cannot recall a single time in between lyrics, or during (the very small amount of) down time, that front man JD wasn't keeping the crowd up in some way.
I had many other impressions throughout the set. The sound quality was excellent. I know that has a great deal to do with the way the venue handled their equipment, but I don't recall the other three bands sounding that good. What I do recall is seeing the band, right before their set, working closely with the sound technician to make sure all the levels were correct. So, yah, I do think that matters. I like seeing a band that truly cares about sounding their best.
I paid very close attention to every song that The Rum Fits played and truly, truly enjoyed every one. That is not common. Regardless of my support for the band (and I've already said that I had very little towards them before this experience), I can't say I recall many local bands that I liked 100% of their set. Usually it's closer to 40-50%, the rest of the time I am standing in line at the bar. I didn't have time for that with The Rum Fits - I was stuck listening because I wanted to hear what came next.
I went to that show in order to get material for my review. I did not go to go crazy. I did not go to mosh. But I did. I mentioned their ability to drive the room into a mosh frenzy earlier and I am not one to be immune to such a thing. And I am in no way kidding when I say that I had to hold my girlfriend back from entering the pit. And my girlfriend hates punk music. Well, I am pretty sure she likes it a little bit ever since that night. And to me, if there is ANY measure of how successful a punk bad is at their craft it is them getting MY girlfriend to want to jump into a mosh pit.
The only double-edged sword type of statement I have to make about The Rum Fits is this: I would much rather see them live than listen to their CD. The CD is excellent and I truly enjoy 100% of it. If you get a chance to pick it up, the must hears, in my opinion, are 'Home Cookin' and 'Free Drinks'. As much as I don't like to make the CD sound like a bad thing, you must realize seeing them live is an absolutely different experience. Yes, they are great musicians. Yes, the CD is fun to listen to. But these guys are stage performers. These guys exist to make you fly around. So, unless you are playing the CD at full blast, at a party, with people running into each other and beer being thrown around the room -- you're not getting the full experience.
Bottom line? I am being entirely objective. I am impressed that The Rum Fits turned my view of them a full 180. I am looking forward to their return to Albuquerque. I am looking forward to see how they continue to grow.
Mostly, I am looking forward to going to the next show, so I don't have to spend so much time being critical and I can spend most of it throwing myself around.
And if that's not punk, what the fuck is?
-The Butcher.

Newwest.com Write Up
Its not normal that we get a write up by someone we dont know....but Jim Phillips saw us and wrote a little niceness for us in his online magazine promoting New Mexico and the SouthWest. Now the Mohawks may only be a few inches, but you get the gist of his writing!
CHEERS JIM!
So here it is:
The Rum Fits 'Start a Cult'By Jim Phillips, 1-26-07
Okay, so it's a little heavier than what I might like to have on the stereo in my house. And it's not the sort of thing I'd like played at my funeral. But I know that there are those of you out there whose tastes lean toward ballsy, thumping, metallic punk. Not a problem. For you I offer The Rum Fits. Sporting two foot mohawks and coming at you with a towering, rowdy howl, they are one of Albuquerque's top notch, first rate punk outfits.
Find out for yourself on Wednesday, January 31, at The Atomic Cantina.
Albuquerque Journal Write Up
We recently got a write up about the St Patricks Day "St Punktricks Day Show" at The Launchpad in the Albuquerque Journal: Venue
Just a tid bit about us and who was playing the show, so we would like to share it with you all:
Raise a glass to punk on St. Paddy's dayJust so you know, the show that night kicked ass and thank you to all who where there and rocked it with us, and raised a glass to St. Punktrick himself. Thanks to The Launchpad and everyone who played that night as well.By Ron Gonzales
Saturday night, people everywhere will pay homage to St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Many will do this by raising a glass or two of green ale and others will wear something green to avoid getting pinched. However, how does one venerate St. Punktrick, the Mohawk -wearing, punk rock saint who was said to have blessed the careers of 7 Seconds, Buzzcocks, Circle Jerks, and the Exploited?
This year, six of Albuquerque's finest punk bands will converge on Launchpad to trumpet the teachings of St. Punktrick. They include Icky and the yuks, The Unemploid, None of the Above, The Rum Fits, Ends In Tragedy and The Dermas.
For Rumfits drummer Lonnie Lyner, the bands newest member, this show caps a whirlwind of activity. Following a tour with the Boston-based punk band Darkbuster and a show with legendary Agent Orange, Lyner said the Rum Fits will enter Third Eye Studios to record six songs, a mix of older and newer tracks. The band also is planning a split 7-inch with Icky and the Yuks.
Lyver, veteran of Creepshow and the '90s crossover band Brain Erosion, says he senses people are eager to hear real punk rock again and he and his bandmates are proud to make good on that. "A lot of the older crowd, we want to bring back their memories of classic punk rock," Lyver said. "People are in their 30's they're jaded and they're tired of hearing New Found Glory's attempts to make good music."
Lyver also reported, however, that young punkers are turning out in droves to Rum Fits shows as well. He said all of the positive stuff surrounding the band right now makes the members itch for activities outside of Albuquerque."We want to get out of this town," Lyver said. "The band played more than 200 shows in town, so in the near future, we're just going to do out of town gigs, go to Denver and Phoenix. Meantime, we're thinking of maybe doing a run with (Icky and the Yuks) to see where the cards drop."
We finished the recording, of a 5 track EP, at Third Eye Studios. And its gunna blow your mind. There are alot of good shows coming up here in Abq and elsewhere that we are looking forward to, so stop by the page here and check out the dates. Anyone from out of town reading this we WILL be in your area soon so get your boots, shoes, or whatever you wear ready to run amok in the pits and in the bars.DRINK MORE RUM!

Cookin' Meth
Top ten reasons the cops though we were cookin' meth...
10. Noxious fumes emanating from the premises.
9. Suspicious activities.
8. Cause please dont touch, we shake so much.
7. Flaming tiki torch battles in the street.
6. An informant who states they have seen a meth lab in a bedroom.
5. Strange sighting of Joey Budafuco.
4. Cause we are in the 13th street gang yo!
3. Dozens of different vehicles visiting the house.
2. They aint got shit else on us.
1. Cause Im Rick James Bitch, I mean we are The Rum Fits Bitch! But seriously at 8 am this morning we were awakened to a swat team yelling at us on a loud speaker. We were quickly subdued for 2 hours, in white bunny suits and plastic zip ties, while they proceeded to wait till biohazard suits arrived. They then search the house and found... tada, nothing. Cause we dont cook meth! So; 1 broken garage door, a wrecked house (not that thats any thing different), 3 sets of sore wrists, and 4 hours later, we were released. The moral of the story is that you cant count on your informants, especially if they have been drinking at our house.
At least Bella (our very friendly and social pit bull) had a good time, and was not killed.
Cheers,
